Athens Foundation
The Athens Foundation was started in 1980 when eight local women each donated $50. With an endowment worth over $3 million in 2008, the Athens Foundation's mission is to enhance the quality of life for the people of Athens County through building endowments, awarding grants, and providing leadership on key community issues now and for generations to come.

Area Served: The Athens Foundation gives primarily in Athens County.

Emphasis: The Athens Foundation includes a variety of funds, some of which focus on giving to specific causes or organizations. In general, the foundation provides support for the arts and humanities, civic affairs, environmental protection and conservation, education, health, mental retardation, animal protection and social services. The Athens Foundation does not provide scholarships or support for religious or political projects.

Grant Information: In 2007, the Athens Foundation awarded a total of more than $154,000 to nonprofit organizations; individual grant awards ranged from $700 to $20,000.
